How do I start an app business?
Starting an app business begins long before any code is written. The founders who build successful app businesses consistently do three things before committing to development: they validate the idea, they understand their users deeply, and they test something real before spending serious money.
CB Insights looked at 431 venture-backed companies that shut down from 2023 onwards and could pin down why 385 of them failed. Poor product-market fit accounted for 43%. Entrepreneurs consistently underestimate market validation time by a factor of 3x, meaning what most founders think will take a month to validate typically takes three. Skipping this step doesn't save time. It costs far more time and money later.
If you don't have a technical background, and most app founders don't, the temptation is to find a developer immediately. Resist it. Before you hire anyone, know exactly what you're asking them to build.
Getting to that clarity used to be expensive and slow. Discovery phases with agencies cost thousands before anything was built. User research programmes took months. For most first-time founders, doing it properly simply wasn't realistic.
That's no longer true. A working prototype that demonstrates the core idea, something real enough to put in front of your target users and get honest feedback from, can now be built in days. The foundation of a successful app business isn't the code. It's the clarity about what the code needs to do, and getting that clarity has never been faster or more affordable.
